Introduction

AlBidayah divides into three sections. The first, spread over this and the next two galleries, presents objects that belong to areas of undisputed universal sanctity for Muslims: the Qur’an and the Ka‘bah—the Word of God and the House of God.

The Ka‘bah is unique and localized, and items that have been in or touched the Ka‘bah hold an inestimable status. The presentation of such objects in AlBidayah is unprecedented not only in number but, more importantly, in nature.

The text of the Holy Qur’an can be faithfully transcribed anywhere in the world. Yet no amount of repetition diminishes its divine message. Instead, it causes it to resonate universally. The copies of the Qur’an displayed in AlBidayah are of especial interest, as all have been dedicated to institutions in Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, many to the Prophet’s Mosque.

The remaining second and third sections of AlBidayah feature works by contemporary artists, reflecting diverse spiritual responses to Allah’s Majesty and Mercy. While the initial installations explore expressions of piety and humility, both personal and communal, the final installations contemplate Allah’s transcendence—His Power too great to comprehend and his luminous Grace that inspires awe and devotion
