where he lives and works
Timo Nasseri was born in Berlin to a German mother and an Iranian father. He obtained a diploma in photography from the Lette-Verein, Berlin (1997) and then shifted to sculpture in 2004. Nasseri draws from geometry and mathematical concepts, combining elements from Islamic and Western cultural heritages, particularly in regard to architecture, calligraphy, and religious references. Often inspired by literature, Nasseri explores themes of infinity, transcendence, and metaphysics. Recent exhibitions include San Diego Museum of Art (2024), Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich (2022, 2019), British Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2021), ZKM, Karlsruhe (2019), Aga Khan Museum, Toronto (2017), Melbourne Triennale (2017), Maraya Art Centre, Sharjah (2017), and KW-Kunstwerke, Berlin (2015). He also won the Abraaj Capital Art Prize in 2011.
Echoes of the Skies
Inspired by 12th-century Persian poetry, Echoes of the Skies is a propositional work of self-discovery. The artwork features avian protagonists who embark on a quest to find their sovereign: the mythical Simorgh. The birds traverse seven valleys, each representing a stage of spiritual enlightenment, culminating in the realization of divine unity within all creation. The installation conceptually merges the allegorical depth of 12th-century Persian poetry with the heritage of Islamic architecture.
Integrating the iconic Islamic muqarnas pattern in the work, they serve as the foundation for a flock of reflective birds, symbolizing both individual souls and the collective consciousness of humanity. From below, the intricate geometrical pattern unfolds in its entirety, inviting contemplation of divine order and symmetry. From afar, the fragmented mirrors form a constellation, reflecting the surrounding environment as shards from a celestial puzzle. This juxtaposition serves as a visual metaphor for the timeless interplay between heritage and innovation. The hanging dome, which is crafted from 1008 polished stainless-steel mirrors, embodies the fleeting beauty and interconnectedness of existence. Each suspended mirror contributes to the overall composition, reflecting both light and consciousness.
